Silk School

Three things worth knowing before you buy anything called silk, ours included.

Silk or satin?

Satin is a weave, not a material. Anything can be woven into satin, and most satin sold for hair is polyester. Silk is a fibre, spun by silkworms, and it can be woven into satin too, which is why the labels confuse everyone. The question to ask is not satin or silk. It's: what fibre, and how much of it.

What momme means

Momme is the weight of silk fabric: how many pounds a piece 100 yards long and 45 inches wide weighs. Higher momme means denser, heavier silk. Pillowcases are usually 19 to 25 momme. We'll publish ours the day our samples pass their checks, along with the grade and the certificate.

How to look after silk

Hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent, or a mesh bag on the delicate cycle. No bleach, no tumble dryer, no direct sun. Lay flat or hang in the shade. Silk likes to be treated the way you'd treat your own hair.

One rule we keep: we say what silk is, never what it does to your hair. That part is yours to find out, and your morning will tell you.
